My favorite investments

If you’ve been scrolling TikTok at all recently, you’ve probably seen 1,000 videos of people listing out items or experiences that are “worth the money.”

The trend is basically people listing five (usually expensive) things they swear are worth the splurge!!

A few recurring ones I’ve seen:

  • Cyklar vanilla verve hand cream (true, this is in my purse)

  • Getting shoes resoled at the cobbler (true again, just gave 3 pairs to my guy on Ave C)

  • Living alone

  • Gym Memberships

  • Laser hair removal / Botox

  • Loyalty to Delta Airlines

  • Good kitchen knives

Not gonna lie, I like this trend. After all, I’m a material girl.

BUT since I always encourage you guys to look deeper and go beyond the obvious…

Today instead I’m sharing the things I believe are always worth your time and effort:

Get ready to take some notes

  1. A weekly ritual just for you

Back in college I had my birth chart read (lol). The natal astrologer told me I was born on a Tuesday. From that day forward, every Tuesday became my "weekly birthday," and ever since, after my 6am hot pilates class, I treat myself to buying an iced latte before work

Groundbreaking, I know. BUT I believe it’s important to have something you can looking forward to every week that you give yourself, no questions asked. Big or small!

Whatever your prerogative is, if it’s a treat to you, it counts! If you’re curious when your weekly birthday is, you can find out here.

  2. Pick up the phone

Ever since moving to New York, I have so many long-distance friends. That also means it takes a lot more effort to keep up with all my besties, but it's always worth it.

Sometimes I think about how much easier it would be to send a quick text instead of having an phone call... but every single time, I'm glad I picked up the phone to have an actual conversation.

I have standing calls with my parents and a few friends, have sent (and listened to) approximately one million 3 to 9 minute voice memos, and regularly send random camera roll photo dumps to group chats where I learn my friends are living much cooler lives than I am.

You need quality people in your life, so be a quality person who CALLS.

  3. Hobbies you take seriously

I think it's so hot when I meet people who have something outside of their day job that they're genuinely good at, passionate about, and committed to.

Now, it's a hobby, so it's supposed to be fun first and foremost. But maybe it's a little challenging, or you're still kind of a beginner. I think it's cool to care enough about something to want to get better at it.

  4. Celebrating your friends & congratulating people

When the people you care about have something to celebrate, show up for them. In fact, I have a friend's "I just quit my toxic job" party coming up soon!

This is also SO important at work. When someone gets promoted, wraps a cool project, or absolutely crushes their presentation at All Hands... tell them.

Proof: I congratulated someone after they won something at work → he asked me to collaborate on a few projects → he ended up introducing me to the people who gave me my first job. There's your career tie-in for this week ;)

  5. Moving in silence (hot take?!?!)

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about #BuildingInPublic most of the time. But sometimes I think you're better off keeping the details, the big dreams, and the plans in motion to yourself 🤫

I’m a believer in making your biggest moves without the whole world knowing. Sometimes you gotta be crazy. You gotta shock people once in a while! Let them know you have it in you…and let them find out after you did allllll the work

The scientific reason we overthink things:

I learned about the concept of open loops: thoughts, decisions, interactions, or intentions that your nervous system has flagged as unfinished. As long as a loop stays open, it’s fighting for your attention and focus (not ideal for a lock in)

These happen when you haven’t made the decision, when you haven’t said what’s on your mind, or when you haven’t been able to fully process something that happened

It’s time we use these thoughts as data!! What is the unresolved thing and how can we make a choice to fix it? Or at least realize we’re in a pattern of overthinking.
